How We Coach

A five-chapter course in the physiology, the decisions and the reasoning behind every session we write.

Learn Our Philosophy and Methods as Our Athlete.

Most training advice hands you a number and moves on. A pace band. A power zone. A weekly total. You follow it, and when it stops working nobody can tell you why — because nobody told you what the number was built from in the first place.

This course is the opposite. It's the whole system, in order, in plain language: where your numbers come from, what your body is doing at each one, which instrument to believe when they disagree, why your plan looks the way it does, and how all of it turns into a race.

What you'll be able to do

Explain every number on your training plan. Run your own field test and know when it's lying to you. Read a long ride and tell whether it was fatigue, heat or fuelling. Understand why you were given this block and not a harder one. And pace any distance from your own physiology instead of somebody's chart.

Read it at whatever depth you want

Every chapter has three layers. Read only the main text and you'll get the whole picture in plain English. The two boxed layers are optional.

The main text

Plain language, no jargon left undefined. If you read nothing else, you'll still understand how we coach.

Going deeper

The physiology underneath, the protocols, and the reasoning we use as coaches. Skip it freely.

If we coach you

What this looks like inside your actual plan — where to find it in TrainingPeaks and what your coach is watching.

The five chapters

1
Your Numbers Are Yours

Why we measure you instead of estimating you. What Critical Power and Critical Speed actually are, how to test all three sports yourself, and the four situations where a perfectly clean test should be ignored.

2
The Landscape Inside You

Four landmarks, not three — the top of easy, where sugar takes over, the last point of balance, and your line. What your muscles are doing in each zone, and the finite room above the line.

3
Reading Your Own Body

Power, pace, heart rate and effort — what each one measures, what each one hides, and which is in charge when they disagree. Plus how to read a fade and what your morning numbers can honestly tell you.

4
Why Your Plan Looks Like This

The House, and why a weak layer caps everything above it. How we choose your block, how a block ends on evidence rather than a date, and the biggest week you can actually repeat.

5
How We Race It

Turning your line into a race plan. Why the percentage drops as the distance grows, why going out easy and going out hard are not opposite mistakes, and what to trust when the day comes apart.

Why we give this away

Because an athlete who understands the reasoning trains better than one who follows instructions. That's true whether the plan came from us or from anywhere else.

And because the honest argument for coaching isn't a secret method. It's that someone is watching your numbers every week and making the call you can't make about yourself.
