TrainingPeaks Plan vs. a Real Coach: Which Should You Get?

TrainingPeaks plan or coach: the short answer

Choose a training plan if you can self-manage; choose a coach if your training needs to change as your life, fatigue and results change. A plan gives you a fixed schedule on TrainingPeaks. A coach gives you ongoing decisions about that schedule.

Angela Naeth Coaching offers both: TrainingPlans+ (from $139 per 4 weeks), 1-1 Foundation coaching (from $225 single-sport, $350 triathlon) and 1-1 Comprehensive coaching (from $275 single-sport, $425 triathlon). Coaching is delivered through TrainingPeaks using the StressLogic System™.

Where does TrainingPlans+ fit?

TrainingPeaks is the platform where you receive your workouts and record your training. TrainingPlans+ is Angela Naeth Coaching’s self-guided training service delivered through that platform. It is not the same thing as TrainingPeaks Premium, and it is not a dedicated 1-1 coaching relationship.

TrainingPlans+ sits between buying a generic, off-the-shelf plan and working with your own coach. You get ANC-built, progressive training, with a plan from our library or a race season built around your fitness, training history and target events. The “+” includes Critical Speed, Critical Power and heart-rate zone setup, coach-connected support, and TrainingPeaks Premium. Build blocks and durability phases give your training structure between races as well as on the way to your next start line.

The distinction is who manages the day-to-day decisions. With TrainingPlans+, you follow the plan and manage its execution around your life. Coach-connected support does not mean a dedicated coach reviewing every workout, adapting your week, or continuously redesigning your training. Daily workout feedback, unlimited 1-1 communication and real-time StressLogic load decisions are not included.

Choose TrainingPlans+ if you want ANC’s structure and individualized training zones while staying self-directed. Choose 1-1 Foundation or Comprehensive coaching if you want a dedicated coach making adjustments as your training, recovery and life change. In short: TrainingPlans+ gives you the structure and numbers to follow; 1-1 coaching adds the ongoing coaching relationship.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a TrainingPeaks plan or hire a coach?

Buy a plan if you are self-motivated, already know your zones and can adjust training around life yourself; hire a coach if you want someone to change your training as your life, fatigue and results change. A plan is a fixed schedule, while a coach is an ongoing decision-maker.

How much does a TrainingPeaks-style training plan cost compared with coaching?

Angela Naeth Coaching TrainingPlans+ starts from $139 per 4 weeks, 1-1 Foundation coaching starts from $225 for single-sport or $350 for triathlon, and 1-1 Comprehensive coaching starts from $275 for single-sport or $425 for triathlon.

When is a training plan enough?

A plan is usually enough when you have a stable schedule, a few seasons of consistent training behind you, no recurring injuries, and a race that does not need individual peaking. It stops being enough when sessions are routinely missed, injuries recur, or life stress changes your capacity week to week.

When is a real coach worth the extra cost?

A coach is worth it when you are training for a first Ironman or 70.3, juggling work and family, returning from injury, or racing as a woman or masters athlete whose recovery needs shift across the month and the year. Those are the situations where individual adjustment changes the outcome.

What does a coach do that a plan cannot?

A coach reads your actual training data, rewrites upcoming sessions when you miss one or accumulate fatigue, adjusts for travel, illness and stress, and answers questions the same week. Every Angela Naeth Coaching athlete is coached through TrainingPeaks using the StressLogic System™, which uses your training load and life stress to decide what each week should look like.

Can I start with a plan and move to a coach later?

Yes. Many athletes start with TrainingPlans+ and move to 1-1 coaching when they want individual adjustment, a first Ironman, or help with recurring injuries.
